About the State Quarter

Congress passed the 50 State Commemorative Coin Program Act on December 1, 1997. The United States Mint released five quarters each year from 1999 to 2008 in the order states joined the Union. This program replaced the standard Washington quarter design for the reverse side to honor the history and geography of each state. The Mint held public competitions for each state design, and governors had the final say on the chosen imagery. The series concludes with the 2008 Hawaii quarter. The Mint minted over 34 billion coins across the ten-year run. Designers included John Flanagan for the obverse portrait of George Washington, while various artists and engravers created the unique reverse designs for each state. The series ended in 2008, though it led directly into the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories series.

Collecting State Quarter Coins

Start by filling a folder with circulated coins found in pocket change, as most issues remain easy to locate in face-value condition. Focus on finding high-grade Mint State examples for the 1999 Delaware and Pennsylvania quarters, which often carry slight premiums due to high demand from early program collectors. Look for heavy bag marks on the large, flat surfaces of the state designs, as these areas show wear quickly. Avoid cleaned coins with hairlines, and use a 10x jeweler's loupe to inspect for genuine strike details since counterfeits are rare but exist in the form of altered dates.
