1896-S Barber Quarter

The Barber Quarter series began in 1892 and ran until 1916. The United States Mint replaced the Seated Liberty design to comply with a law requiring new coin designs every 25 years. Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the Mint, designed the coin. He based the obverse on his own work for the dime and half dollar, featuring a profile of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a ribbon. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with a shield. The series ended in 1916 because the Mint wanted a more modern design, which resulted in the Standing Liberty Quarter. Throughout the run, the Mint produced these coins at four facilities: Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. You can identify the mint mark on the reverse below the eagle. The 1896-S and 1901-S are the most famous rarities in the series due to their extremely low production numbers.

Focus on building a set of common dates in Good to Very Good condition to learn the series without overspending. Coins from the 1900s through 1916 are generally more affordable than the 1890s issues. Watch for heavy wear on the date, as many Barber Quarters saw years of circulation that smoothed away the numbers. Avoid coins with harsh cleanings or scratches, as these ruin the value. Be careful with added mint marks on common 1901 Philadelphia coins, as scammers often add an 'S' to turn them into the rare 1901-S variety.
