About the American Gold Buffalo

The United States Mint began production of the American Gold Buffalo in 2006. Congress authorized this coin to compete with other 24-karat gold bullion coins on the global market. The Mint chose James Earle Fraser’s iconic 1913 Buffalo Nickel design for the series. The obverse features a Native American profile, and the reverse displays an American Bison standing on a mound of dirt. This coin contains exactly one ounce of .9999 fine gold. The series remains in production today. In 2008, the Mint added fractional sizes of 1/10, 1/4, and 1/2 ounce to the lineup, but these sizes stopped production after that single year. The 2006 issue holds the distinction of being the first .9999 fine gold coin ever produced by the United States government. Collectors identify these coins by their weight and purity, which the Mint stamps directly onto the reverse side.

Collecting American Gold Buffalo Coins

Start your collection with the most recent dates, as these carry the smallest premiums over the current spot price of gold. Focus on coins graded by major services like PCGS or NGC to verify authenticity, as the high gold content makes these a target for counterfeiters. Gold Buffalo coins are soft due to their high purity and develop contact marks easily. Avoid coins with deep rim dings or surface scratches if you want to maintain long-term value. Always store your coins in hard plastic capsules to protect the delicate surfaces from damage.
